Shall we meet this evening?

“¿Quedamos esta tarde...?” En español utilizamos el verbo “quedar” con múltiples significados, que en inglés vienen representados por diferentes verbos. Para evitar malentendidos, echa un vistazo a los siguientes usos, queda con tus nuevos amigos, y practícalos:

1. Haber (to be left): ¿Queda café? Is there any coffee left?; Quedan tres días para las vacaciones. There are three days left before we go on holiday.
   
2. Tener (to have something left): Todavía nos quedan dos botellas. We have still got two bottles left; No me queda dinero. I haven't got any money left.
   
3. Citarse (to meet): ¿Dónde quedamos? Where shall we meet?; Quedé con ella a las tres. I arranged to meet her at three o'clock.
   
4. Estar situado, llegar (to be): ¿Dónde queda tu hotel? Where is your hotel?; Quedamos terceros en el concurso. We were third in the competition; El colegio me queda muy cerca de casa. The school is very near my house.
   
5. Ropa (to look on, to be, to suit): ¿Qué tal le queda la chaqueta? How does the jacket look on her?; Esta falda me queda grande. This skirt is too big for me; Ese jersey realmente te queda muy bien. That sweater really suits you.
   
6. Memoria (to sink in): Estudio mucho pero no me queda. I study a lot but it doesn't sink in.
   
7. Quedar en, ponerse de acuerdo en (to agree with): Quedamos en vernos el martes. We agreed to meet on Tuesday.
   
8. Quedarse en un lugar (to stay): Hoy se quedó en casa. Today he stayed at home.
   
9. Quedarse calvo, ciego (to go bald, blind): Se quedó calvo a los veinte años. He went bald when he was twenty.
   
10. Quedarse con (to keep): Quédese con el cambio. Keep the change.
    
11. Quedar bien, mal con alguien (to make a good/bad impression on somebody): Quedé muy mal con Raúl. I made a very bad impression on Raúl.
    
12. Quedarse sin algo (to run out of something): Me quedé sin cambio. I have run out of change; Camino a su casa se quedó sin combustible. On his way home he ran out of gasoline.
    
13. Distancias, recorridos (con still): Quedan cinco kilómetros para llegar a Buenos Aires. It's still five kilometres to arrive in Buenos Aires.
